Re: Sylvia Young Experience Day
I can't help you with the experience day,but I do think that these kind of things make excellent presents, instead of dcs accumulating loads of stuff year on year(acutely aware of this just after Xmas!)And I think shows kids that experiences can be better than possesions. My dd really wants to do a workshop at Easter, and I'm like well maybe, but it costs x amount of money so you won't be getting anything else!
Re: Sylvia Young Experience Day
My DD did this experience day last summer when she was still 9, and there were a range of ages. She really enjoyed it. They were split into small groups that they stayed with during the day and followed their own timetable to go to each of the four sessions at different times. The teacher running each session gives each child a 'grade', though my DD's description of this wasn't very clear...
DD also loved going to the canteen for lunch and in particular the snacks!!
They got to have a question and answer session with Sylvia Young herself, so prime your dd to get any burning questions ready!!
The booking and admin of organising this was all very easy too.
The rest of the family had a great day out at the relatively nearby London Zoo...

Re: Sylvia Young Experience Day
Know nothing about the experience day (though, now I've heard about it might look into for my DS!) but know something about accommodation in London. TBH non of it is really 'affordable' (although one persons affordable etc...).
When I go we stay in a Premier Inn on the outskirts of London. For example, last weekend I went to see the gorgeous Mr Tennant at The Barbican but stayed in the PI at Enfield. Rooms at £29 per night (for up to 2 adults and 2 kids) and a 30-45 minute drive to the Barbican. Hatfield is another good one with a frequent and fast train into central London from there.
Good luck with your search

Re: Sylvia Young Experience Day
I'm on a course in London next week and am paying £28 -£45/night at the Kings Cross/Royal Scots Travelodge. I could have got the Farringdon one at the same price, including family rooms. They are a bit far from the tube though and buses are fiddly. Don't know how convenient that makes them for Sylvia Young

He could go and he could shine, not just stay here counting time,

Look at Tune hotels - Paddington
Its about 5 mins walk from the school and quite cheap usually about £75 for a double room for the night
