HELP with opening .mts files

Post by tikka »

Hi
Trying to get some videos (of DS performing of course!) off my camera onto my computer but they are .mts files and my computer won't open them. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do?

Many thanks

Can you convert them into a format you can read using a programme like Zamzar?

Thanks Sapphire, but Zamzar couldn't do .mts files. Seems crazy that I can watch the videos I took on my little camera but can't download them!

Apparently DH I downloaded AnyVideoConverter onto our laptop, which does what it says on the tin and has never given any problems with corrupt files etc. Hope this helps!

Your camera should have come with a programme on disk to let you do this? Is it still in the box?

YEP, its still in the box....although it came out of the box once and onto the computer but looked too complicated for me to cope with so it went back in the box

A friend opened the files on Windows 7, using Windows Photo gallery, so i tried it but I have Window XP and XP couldn't do it.

I shall try Anyvideoconverter, thanks Sapphire.

Hi Sapphire
Downloaded software OK, then I lost internet connection all day and couldn't fix computer so wondered if it was the software  Anyway, back on line now and I have just tried converting the files and it works fine - only problem is I have to choose which file format to convert to and I don't know how to decide.

Just tried .avi format and it speeds the playback up by a factor of 2, so it can't be a good one to choose. What would your dh suggest. I tried mp4, but can't play that back on windows media player. Funny how a little task can last all day!

Thanks

Avi is a fine format and useful if you want to edit the recording, but the files are VERY big. I won't go into detail, but the .mts format is highly compressed, so is hard work for your computer to convert - and probably very long winded. If you get options, then .mov or .wmv are the most useful ones for beginners, although much depends on what you want to do with the pics. If they are going onto a DVD, then probably the best idea is to look at the programme you intend using for that and checking just in case it can handle the mts files directly. If so, stick the video onto that. If it wants a different format, see what it wants and then do your encoding in the right one. Converting video is a real pain in the rear as there are some many ways to do it. If you get stuck, send me a pm and I'll try to help. Swapping from one to another is sadly, how video is nowadays, and guesswork rarely works as it may take a few hours before you find it worked but your videos are only tiny squares in the middle of the screen.

all i really want to do is to be able to view the video on my computer, which I can't do without some software. The files start off as .mts, which would play on windows live photo gallery in Windows 7,, but won't play on my computer as I only have XP.

I've downloaded anyvideoconverter which has tried to convert the files into wmv, but keeps getting stuck and failing. i have successfully converted them to .avi, but they play at 25 fps instead of 50 fps so they go by twice as fast!

I'll have another go!
