Parents not going to Auditions

Is this OK? DD has arranged transport/accommodation without me for some of them

But will they need my input for anything - should she have our income details with her (for the DADA application) or is that done later

I'm having a wobble in case they say she's no good or ask her to leave and I'm not there

I'm not aware that they will need your input for anything. Some of the places my DD auditioned gave talks and Q & A for parents at the start of the day, but not all and certainly not everyone had a parent with them. None of these were places that your DD is auditioning and it was clearly on the audition information sent to us from the outset so don't worry that you are missing out on parent talks. We even helped a foreign student at one audition who spoke very little English and was there on her own as she could not understand the instructions given upon arrival at the venue.

Re income details - certainly not. When you hear back the result from an audition, if they want your DD, you will receive clear instruction at that point of any details they want from you and forms they want you to fill in.

I suddenly had a wobble I was doing the wrong thing

But the colleges I want her to go to I have done lots of research, asked loads of questions and done open days (if I can)......if she gets a place elsewhere I will do the research then

Not sure where your dd is auditioning but the only college I know that not all applicants get asked to stay all day is Performers. The auditions that my DD has done already there have been talks by the Principal of the colleges for parents where we had the opportunity to ask questions about Dada's etc.

Your Dd is very grown up to be able to go on her own I don't think my dd would have been able to do the travel etc all on her own, good on her!!

Both DS and DD went to all their auditions on their own.

They were certainly not interested in me attending (I'm certain they would have done what they could to dissuade me) - and it didn't even occur to me to go... I am prone to haunting feelings of guilt about my parenting - is this another one I should add to the list?

They were both in the 6th form.

I know your dd is younger - but if she is happy to go on her own then I think that is absolutely fine.

I think it's quite a new thing for parents to attend college/Uni open days/interview/audition days isn't it? I had really rather protective parents but they didn't come with me to any of my Uni interviews in the dark ages.

Yes she was only 16 last Thursday <gulp> but she has been travelling to London by herself since February and since Easter she has been there every weekend (at Urdang for a dance class not run by Urdang) and since half term she has been staying in London on a Saturday night (by herself - I've been having kittens!!)

The ones I am going to are because:

* She has to stay in a hotel as we have no family or accommodation near (16 yos can't)
* She can't get there easily (Performers - although it's the closest it's very tricky to get to, so we are driving)
* She hasn't been before and is a bit nervous

So she is doing 3 completely by herself & 5 with me 'around' but hopefully not interfering too much (small hope)


I wouldn't feel guilty about not going....as you say there are plenty of other things to feel guilty for!

I think a lot of the parents going/not going is often down to how easy it is to get there and if you need to stay overnight. I went with DD to all of her auditions as it would have taken her forever to get there with so many train and bus changes and as a summer birthday she was still only 15. For my DS for uni it was a different matter. I took him to one and DH dropped him off on his way to a meeting for another. Apart from that he and his friends tended to go alone or in groups. What we did find different for university to when I went was that once my DS had offers, he and the parents were invited to attend a meeting with his actual department. Upon arrival students and parents were separated and we were given talks and information on the courses, university etc I guess in this day and age with parents generally having quite a financial investment in their offsprings education as well as the students themselves taking on such debt, each university will want to sell themselves to the parents as much as the students.

As for vocational school, for us it was DH that suddenly threw the wobble. He had been supportive but not really involved in the audition process and it was after DD had an offer and accepted it and got funding that it dawned on him that he was sending DD to a school he had never even seen. It was at that late stage that he arranged to go and visit the school.

I took DD to all of her auditions…..but that was my choice (not hers!) she would have been perfectly happy for me not to be there!! There were many auditionees there without parents, so it's not unusual at all!!

She has just packed for 4 days away (Audition, Associates, Associates, Audition)

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh I'm glad I'm not going!!! She is so stressy

& packing lunch for days in advance is a nightmare!!

I'm a bit lonely, stressy & sick feeling - but she is fine!
