Agency locations?

Post by tekobeko2 »

Hi there,

I am a student, currently living in London. Im having a bit of trouble deciding on an agency to represent me.
I was wondering, if I was to join an agency that wasn't in London, would the castings/jobs be located in London,
or where the agency is based?

Many thanks xo

Eek!

I'm afraid you may have some learning to do tekobeko2.

It really isn't a case of you deciding on an agency. Although, in theory, the actor employs the agent, in practice the agent chooses who they wish to represent. (If you are thinking of an actors' agency). What kind of experience do you have? Are you looking for extra work or acting work?

Most agents are based in London - though there are quite a few in Manchester and a scattering based elsewhere around the country. You can find most of them listed in "Contacts". Most castings and auditions take place in London (though some will be in other cities) - work can be anywhere in the country - it depends on the job. Where the casting takes place also depends on the job and the location of the casting director. Agents outside London do get to hear about jobs being cast in London. Agents in London do get to hear about jobs being cast elsewhere - though CDs will sometimes approach(for example) Manchester agents for particular jobs, knowing that they are likely to have lots of suitable people on their books.

If you are hoping for acting work then I recommend reading: "An Actors' Guide to getting Work" by Simon Dunmore and "Actors' Yearbook" (or Handbook?) which give a good overview of the profession.

Also, would you agree that all agencies in Spotlight are genuine?

No, you still need to employ due diligence even when they are listed in Contacts. Presumably you know the usual "do's and don'ts" re: upfront fees etc?

Are these acting agencies that have approached you? Have they seen you perform?

Perhaps I'm making too many assumptions about the depth of your knowledge by the way you phrased your initial question - in which case I apologise! :D Are you a drama school student? Are these agencies that have approached you after your end of year performances?

Ahaha its fine, yes I do know all of these thingies :P, Im at Brit :). Some of them have seen me perform. So basically, I applied to the agencies.
Many have been interested, but some of the fee's I wasn't too certain about in the beginning, and if I would actually get work from them.
It's a game of luck really :P.

Ok. The picture is a bit clearer now :D

I still think that perhaps there are a few gaps in your knowledge, judging from what you say, but it might just be the way it is expressed.

So,are you still at school? I thought you meant University or Drama school student - sorry! Perhaps you could ask your teachers' advice about the agents who have approached you? They may be able to make recommendations (or otherwise). Did you write to the agents, asking for representation - or did they contact you (offering representation) having seen you perform? You should never pay a fee to be represented by an actors' agency - so if any agent that has approached you has asked for a fee I would recommend ignoring them.

Agents don't really "get" work for actors - it's a common misconception. Do you know how plays, films and TV and other things get cast? What kind of work are you hoping for? What are you hoping to gain by getting agency representation? How old are you?

Sorry if this sounds like an interrogation (it does, doesn't it? ), I'm just trying to work out quite what you know about the industry (and how actors get work) so that I can hopefully pitch the information and advice at the right sort of level.
