University Courses w/o UCAS

Post by OddJazzShoes »

Hi everyone!
I've just created a new account, returning here after a few years away due to GCSEs and AS Levels.
Anyway, as a year 12 student I am currently looking around for universities next year. with a particular interest in Musical Theatre / Acting / Drama / Theatre. I recall having been told about BA courses at Uni which did not have to be applied to through UCAS and that appealed to me as I know that these courses are hard to get a place on. However, I've yet to come across any courses like that, and I was wondering if anyone else knew what this information was referring to, or weather it is false.
Also, my apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere here,
Thanks,

Quite a number of drama schools have courses where you end up with a BA (e.g. RADA) but you do not apply via UCAS (at least, as far as I am aware - certainly it used to be direct application). I'm not sure whether this is what you mean? I don't think I am aware of any University courses that are not via UCAS.

I'm not sure I quite understand what you mean when you refer to courses being hard to get a place on - I can't really see how this is linked to whether application is via UCAS or not? Could you try and clarify? :D

not all of BA Acting and MT courses at the top drama schools can be applied for via UCAS system, those where you can are because they are attached to Universities, or they have BA courses at actual Universities.
You can apply to LIPA and CSSD for example via UCAS, as they are part of Liverpool University and University of London, but you can also apply directly too, you don't have to apply via UCAS. But you can't apply via UCAS system for independent schools such as LAMDA/RADA/DRAMA CENTRE/GUILDHALL, you'd have to apply direct for their BA Courses because they're not affiliated with any University.
As pg has said - It depends what course you're thinking about and where ? I think you need to look at each individual school/university , look at their websites and there's lots of information about funding on there too, and how to apply. Or you an do a course search via UCAS to see where they do BA courses you're interested in.

Thank you both so much.

By hard to get on, I re read what I wrote and it isn't that clear. What I mean is I wanted to know whether there are courses which do not count as one of the 5 applications. I mentions the difficulty as the demand for places is high on performance courses and several friends have applied and auditioned unsuccessfully and this has obviously caused a lot of stress. I just want to clarify options for applying next year.

Thank you both so much,

Ah ok. Yes there are a few that are not via UCAS. If you look at http://www.dramauk.co.uk/courses this will give you links to all the accredited courses, they will all have websites which will then show how to apply for each.
