Showreel Material/Student Films

Post by Rachel_M »

Hi :) This is the daughter of Rachel_M, and I just wanted to ask a question about showreel material.

Basically I am trying to put together a showreel because I don't really seem to be getting anywhere having only taped monologues to submit for auditions/agents. I've been applying for probably about 6 short films a day on mandy.com, with very little response (except for every audition in Manchester & Wales that I've accidently applied for - every single one of those seemed to invite me to audition but 5 hours is just too far to travel just for a student film ) I'm not sure why I don't seem to be getting anywhere with the student films, but either way I'm going to have to try a new tactic, and so I'm thinking of either:

1. Approaching my local Universities and colleges directly and offering my 'services' as an actor for media/film students projects. Is this a good idea or a bad idea? I'm not sure if it would get me noticed more or if it would make me come across unprofessional or desperate! ?

2. Get some scenes filmed specifically for showreel material. I've seen a few websites offering this service and have been approached by one of them. I'm still in two minds about doing this though, because firstly, I imagine you have to pay for this, and secondly, I don't really know if it's something that's frowned upon by agents and casting directors as it shows lack of actual experience; or if it's seen as a positive thing because it shows initiative and a much wider range as an actor than just sending off a monologue taped in a kitchen! ?

So if anybody could offer me some advice on either or both of these two points, I would really really appreciate it! Thank you very much! :)

Ive heard The Actor's Studio at Pinewood Studios is good for people who don't have film or tv material. :D

Hi,
Definately contact local universities! They are always looking for actors for their films and it can be great experience. They will like that you have shown initiative as well.
On the showreel bit, I have been in many short films and never once sent off a showreel. Professional film makers or agents, I have heard, dont like you to film your own things as they can see your ability for acting when they audition you. I think the thing you need to work on is the covering letter/message you send with your application. Im not sure how much space you get but with starnow you get about 100 characters so you have to make it eye catching, memorable and brief. They trawl through loads so keep it concise; say how you are suited to the part and if there has been a part you have done similar to the one you are applying for briefly link it in. I read in a casting advice book that said that a girl was applying to be a witch who was a liar and she put: 'With my green eyes and long dark hair im halfway to being a witch, although i never lie'. The director said that it is simple but stands out amongst all the other 'i have a passion for acting' applications. You may also want to look at what you have put on your CV and how professionally it is laid out. Set it out something like; The name of the production/film etc, the role you played or whether it was a main part/ extra, and then put the name ofthe director or the company. You can elaborate on a certain role in your application if you feel it would relate to it.

Good luck!
