Post by QueenBeexoxo »

Hey

so Im applying for drama school later this year and have most my monologue pieces sorted...
however... a few require you to sing a short song and i cannot sing to save my life [I can rap, eminem, fergie, nicki minaj etc..] but i cant sing high notes. myvoice is pretty low. i know the purpose of singing is to communiate as an actor so has anyone got any ideas as to what sort of song i could try?

thank you for all you help

First - identify properly if you can sing in tune. Plenty of people can pitch, but cannot sustain a note - making them definitely NOT a singer, but able to sing. Only a few people can't pitch. Ringo Starr was an example of somebody not a singer - so the tracks everyone remembers him for were chosen to suit his voice. Octopusses Garden is a good example. No sustained notes and a limited range, and he got away with it.

We could suggest all sorts of songs but in all honesty we have no idea what would suit you. Why not find a local singing teacher and have a session with them - they'll listen to your voice and be able to suggest something that will work. It will also let you know exactly what kind of voice you have, and they'll give you tips for selecting suitable material. Good luck.

DD was really worried about this too and found that a few sessions with a local singing teacher definitely helped improve her technique, boost confidence and provide advice re. song choices. Good luck!

If this is for an acting course then they will NOT expect an accomplished singer. Rather you need to act through song, be confident in your performance etc I think even a couple of lessons with a local singing teacher (try to go by word of mouth if poss) will give you the confidence needed to do this effectively.

The choice of song could be discussed with him/her. There may be something that you feel confident singing and sounds good. Most songs can show "acting", though the best for this tend to come from the musical theatre repertoire.

Good luck :D
