Drama School Auditions and Applications

Post by purplefizz »

Hello everyone :) This is my first post here so I hope it's in the right place. I've been using this website for a while now and found it very useful and interesting, but I've only just signed up properly now as I've got a few questions about about my drama school audition and applications, so I thought I would ask all of the experts on here!

Firstly, there's a question on my scholarship application that says "Motivation/About Yourself" and I'm not quite sure what to write for it? I'm guessing something along the lines of why I think I should get a scholarship etc, but I just wanted to be sure :)

And secondly, for my audition I need to prepare two contrasting musical theatre songs, but I'm not entirely sure whether 'contrasting' means one happy and one sad, or one upbeat and one slow, or both!? Also does that 'happy' song have to be the upbeat one and the sad have to be the slow one? Because I'm thinking of singing Somewhere That's Green (Little Shop Of Horrors) for my slow song, but the mood of that song is happy! So that means for my upbeat song I need to find something sad, which might be tricky! (Any suggestions welcome!) I was thinking of maybe doing You Don't Know (Next To Normal) as my second song, but I wasn't sure about it seeing as it's not very well known, and I didn't know whether that would be a good or a bad thing.

Anyway, I hope I explained all of that okay, and any replies or advice will be very appreciated and welcomed!

Thank you again :)

...By the way; nope I am not a mum  I'm 18 and applying for drama school for this September.

Contrast can mean any two songs that are different in mood, tempo, emotion etc. Don't worry too much about it, choose sonsg you like and can sing well. As for the written bit, just explain why you want to do the course, what got you interested in Acting, who inspires you etc. Again, there are no really "right" answers.

Best of luck!! It is worth doing a search of the site as there have been lots of threads about auditions, training etc.

Out of interest where are you applying?

Dh teaches and has taught in London based drama schools. Next to Normal is very "in" at the moment so don't worry. They will know it.
