Oh you would think after six years at sylvia young she would have a better chance than most. My dd is doing a Btec at college at the minute but to be honest her college is rubbish she is only there two days a week and its meant to be full time cutbacks eh. The foundation courses are all about the money, i would rather wait and pay for a main stream course if i had to. My daughter is one of the youngest in her yr she is not 18 till July but in her second year of college she left school at 15 when most of them where turning sixteen so i suppose she has that advantage. If you can call it one.

A year does make a lot of difference and your daughter should not give up.

My dd goes to LSMT and I have found them very professional and would really be surprised that the helpers would know the principals judgements on the day. I have been nothing but impressed with the standard of tutoring and pastoral care at the school. I do know that their dance standard is getting higher year on year my dd has danced since the age of 4 and she was worried the dance might be to easy not the case. They have mock auditions every week with someone from west end teaching a show routine its treated like a casting and they say who would be in a running for a recall etc if it had been a real audition. Re size they have a varied mix of sizes but they are very concerned on stamina and fitness im sure dd said there was someone who did not get in one year but on feedback was advised to work on fitness and stamina and retry next year. What I would say is that the majority studying at LSMT are older many have undertaken 3 year degree either in musical theatre or an academic degree whilst continuing with theatre societies etc and many have already worked in the performing industry as singers and are now looking to strenthen their triple threat skills - it is aimed at an age of 18-30 so 17 is very young. Having been involved in performing myself I was blown away by the standard of singing when we saw the show at christmas term.
Your dd should not give up many people get in 2nd time round and even once you have trained most professionals continue training and honing those skills year after year even once they are working professionals
If you dont buy a ticket how can you ever expect to win !!

Just re read your post and see that she is more interested in commercial singing have you thought about BIM (Birmingham Institute of Performing ) ad Vocal techs very suited to commercial singers also Italia Conti do a course that is suitable for singers only not just the dance and MT courses - good luck

There's also the Tech Music School to consider- I have known a few people who have gone there (but they were bassists/drummers) and are now working as musicians. I know they have a 1yr Singing course that The Stage is providing a scholarship for and they also do a 3yr Degree as well.

Rose Bruford also do a Actor Musicianship Degree which is NCDT accredited but I'm not sure if that is for actors who play instruments and sing rather than just actors who sing (not sure if your dd plays instruments)

Because your dd is young though it may be worth reapplying the following year if these courses are not suitable or have missed the deadline to enter-she certainly sounds talented (the fact she got into SY and got recalls this year proves that!) and taking a year out might do her some good as it will give her time to gain some 'life experience' that the schools are always after

Thanks for all you help on hear I feel alot better now. yes there is some confusion it was jasmines dd who got into syliva young not mine. She has had two recalls though one for mountview and one for lsmt, so im guessing thats a good sign or do most people get one. My dd is home from london today so we will have to sit down and discuss the next route to go down. It really hard the worse thing is you get no feedback from any of them so its hard to know where your going wrong. Ive been looking at MTA it was voted the top out of 200 by the stage its relatively knew so there is no funding so this might be a problem, I know she wants to sing but still needs the MT training I feel. She can dance and has done since she was young but is not a flexible dancer shes more commercial but she can do tap and ballet. Her main passion is singing but she is turning into a good actress as well. The problem is in the north east where you may be deemed as good, when you get to London its a whole different ball game. She recently got a recall for a cbbc show which is starting this month, she did get recalled to London and was up against some real experienced actors one who is on tv at the minute, havent heard anything since but the fact that she got to a final recall proves to me that she must have something. So we wont give up just yet.

Yes is was my dd who was at SY ...She did get into to several of the 'big' colleges, and was shortlisted for a Dada at one of them, but we just could not afford it...
It is so hard to keep them motivated when they dont get the outcome that they would like...but I think things happen for a reason, and my dd has stayed very grounded and is enjoying college.
She also attends a fantastic Sunday performing arts school and the two courses really compliment each other...

Keep your chin up and I am sure the right course is just around the corner xxxxx
I believe that children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way.......

Realistically to give it a fair shot you may need to try a couple of years running. The foundation can be a route in - although expensive. Mountview certainly has all shapes and sizes. Good luck! University of Westminster has Commercial Music Degree. :D
