Character Shoes?

My son, aged 16 is about to start rehearsing for a local production of Les Mis. We have just received an e mail saying that he should wear boots or character shoes. He has not done anything like this before and the only boots he possesses are hiking boots which I am sure will not be suitable!! Could anyone let me know what character shoes are please?

I should imagine the shoes would be a canvas lace up shoe with small heel , probably around £16.00 or look on ebay. Hope this helps

I think we will have to visit the local dancewear shop, he starts on Monday!
