I echo previous comments wishing all our DC well for the start of their degree or diploma courses and hoping they'll have a smoother ride this year. DD is in the middle of a fun but expensive Freshers Week at ArtsEd. They seem to be making up for lost celebration times! She loves her flat and flat mates and can't wait for the course proper to start. Hoping to sort a Saturday job this week to help with living costs. It's an exciting time for them all!
Good luck everyone!

Hi does anyone know of any student rooms going near Performers college please. Son accepted place on Friday last week but we can't find any accommodation anywhere :(

Doesn't want a host family as has done that before and didn't like it. He is 21 and capable of living on his own. \

thank you

From what I've read in here before accommodation for Performers can be difficult to find for first years, a problem that became more difficult when they increased their degree numbers so few years ago. As they move into 2nd and 3rd years they grab early on when they become aware of who is moving out.

I just want to wish you the best and hope you find something but also say don't be so desperate to get some where you don't go through a reputable source. We were nearly scammed out of £1, 000 due to a last minute foundation offer last month. Fortunately spotted before money exchanged hands but did mean we had to quickly find something else, so have paid more than we'd have ideally liked.

Thank you, he is sharing a flat in Trafford House. More expensive than we hoped but at least he has somewhere now.

Good to hear everyone is settled and happy and ready to start their courses - all the very best of luck to them all doing what they have worked so very hard for!
DD has loved Freshers week at Performers and they've really made an effort which has been nice and even included 2nd and 3rd years on the Thames Boat do to make up for last year. She has made friends and started assessment week this week so next week they will have their sets and start properly. They many set on tap standard due to not everyone being able to tap, whereas everyone can attempt a jazz class regardless. Tap is being aligned with Ballet sets somehow? So we are nit sure yet how that pans out. They've had to sing solo in front of head of singing so it's been a busy week and she is loving it so far which is all we ask for as parents that they embrace it.
They have said it is their largest ever intake but keeping class sizes under 25 and adding a couple of sets....

Bird hasn’t had any freshers events which has been a bit disappointing. Understandable though after how much disruption covid caused last year.
But my daughter seems very happy. Enjoying her classes and the staff are nice.
Interestingly bird also streams on tap.

After seeing many kids struggle with traditional freshers I wouldn’t worry about missing about. Freshers is great for some but very lonely for those who don’t find socialising easy. Best to get stuck into the normal routine and meet people in that way.

It's so nice to hear she's settled in well. I saw all the brilliant Thames Boat and other Freshers pics online, they all looked like they had so much fun! It's good the 2nd and 3rd years were included after missing out last year. Urdang did the same. DD started at Urdang on the 31st Aug with an induction and Freshers week. She had to step out of her comfort zone quite a bit with all the social activities and found she had a great time and so far has met some really lovely people. During that first induction week, she also had leveling classes for ballet, tap and singing. I believe that the standard you are in ballet sets the levels for street, contemporary and jazz classes. The majority of her classes have an average of 15 per group, for some of the singing they are in groups of 7/8. She's completed her 3rd week of training and is really happy which is all I can ask for. It's a little surreal to know they have all finally started at their chosen schools after the long and at times very stressful audition process.

Agreed! My daughter was one of those, she chose the events for the week that she thought she would be best suited for and she enjoyed herself. Some of the other events like the club crawl etc she opted out of.

Ahh, its lovely to see everyones DC's settling in so well to their new dance/drama schools. DD has just finished a very fun freshers at GSA and has just started her first week. As she came from their foundation course she already feels at home but she has loved meeting her new year group. GSA don't stream by tap ability but just by your ability in each dance subject. I am just really excited to see how she grows as a performer :)

My dd is loving life away from home that much we hardly hear from her 🥺 she has enjoyed Freshers, done assessments and is now enjoying her time at Performer's 😁
I've booked her train tickets home for study week as her big sister gave birth to a lil girl on the Tues following drop off in Essex on the Sunday so she's yet to meet her baby niece ☺️
After assessments my dd told me she's in group 0 she's a fabulous ballet dancer but is not a tapper lol nor does she sing or act so can't wait to hear how this is going lol
🤣
I'm happy she's happy but can't help but feel I've lost part of me now she's 4hrs from home 🥺 can't wait to see her next weekend 💞

That's good to hear and how lovely to come home and see the new baby!-
Since the assessment week I am hearing they are all still confused about the random groups (not calling them sets) they appear to be in as it seems as some are amazing at ballet and some never had a lesson before and the same for tap so maybe it is impossible to divide them? As they do seem all jumbled up still from what I can gather...eg people that have never done ballet in group 1 and amazing ballet girls in group 12 and similar in Tap except boys join for some lessons ...Who knows....it doesn't seem very clear at the moment but as long as they are all enjoying it they all have the same classes and teachers just in a different order throughout the week. I suppose it would be very difficult to do a tt if they stream for each genre!

My DD is really enjoying Urdang, the social side and she’s got some lovely friends. It’s been a long 7 week term though and she’s exhausted. I’m sure your DD is the same, they really work them hard. She’s got 2 more days before she’s off on half term break. That’s different, setting their levels on a tap standard. How many sets per class are there for ballet, tap, etc? I believe at Urdang there are 6 or 7 sets each with approx 12 to 15 students. They were all initially levelled based on a ballet, tap and singing class in their first week. Whatever level they were for ballet was used for jazz, contemporary, street, acting, etc. From what DD has said the levels have all been fairly assessed based on ability. The only exception may be if a student is level 1 for all dance classes but level 3 for singing, they may be put into a higher singing level to prevent a clash.

My daughter has absolutely loved her first two weeks at Associated Studios. It's a small cohort but she feels everything is very industry relevant. After being at vocational dance school sine the age of 11 she finds the dance very simple but she knew that and the teachers are working hard to differentiate for her. She knew she needed teh extra singing and acting training that isn't emphasised so much at dance school. She also loves the atmosphere/ethos. It's been the best decision.
