Very new to this, but was told I should audition- but don't know how
Sorry if I'm being a bit ignorant.
Thank You

If you pop NYT into the search box on the top RH side of this page, you'll find threads about it, including the audition process.
Good luck!

The best place to look is on the NYT website! Loads of info there:
http://www.nyt.org.uk/news/2014-auditions
You need to book an audition date and then get preparing your monologue. The actual auditions themselves involve a workshop-based session in the morning - so movement, group work, improv etc. Among other things in this session they are looking for how well you work with others. Then they break for lunch and you should have a time slot for your one-on-one audition in the afternoon. They will ask you to perform your monologue and then will most likely ask you to deliver it in different ways so be prepared for that.
They do audition a lot of people for relatively few places, but its a good experience and you will definitely learn from the audition process even if you aren't successful first time round.
If you are accepted, the next step is to attend one of their residential courses, which is quite pricey. Lots more info about that on their website too though!
Good luck if you do decide to go for it!

They'll be in about a year's time, I think you can register for updates through the NYT website so you get a reminder when bookings open.

I'm spontaneously (ish) having a go tomorrow, without really knowing anything about what's good to choose, what's not... Oh well

Any last-minute advice not necessary but would be gratefully received. Will trawl the back alleys too!

				1) They're looking for natural, age-appropriate monologues - not in any other accent than your own ideally.
2) No props, no scenes from films, no personally written pieces.
3) Enjoy the workshop and don't try to outshine others as they're definitely looking for team players.
Good luck, but also bear in mind a statistic from Birmingham (where my DD was ambassadoring) - on one of the 4 days she helped out, only 1 person got through, out of everyone in that day who auditioned!!!

They say to prepare a monologue from a published play - do you think that could include something from a musical?

I'm sure a musical would be fine, as long as it's still spoken script
But don't pick anything to stylised - remember naturalistic is what they're looking for. They want to see them playing a realistic age-appropriate character.
