i have a short film audition and would love it if you could give me some advice (first time auditioning for a short film)

i asked if i had to prepare for a monologue, but they said no
does that mean it could be cold reading or something else?

plus there is no character breakdown.it says daughter aged 15-17, do i just need to build a character for that role?

and any generals do's and DON'TS if you want :) that would help

thanks everyone so much :D

I would be cautious if there is no breakdown of what you need to do. Do you have someone going with you? Have you checked if these people are real? Im not sure where you have seen this advertised. My son has been to auditions off the star now website and they usually send you a scene to learn lines and prepare for the role. I would ask them. If they dont reply, it sounds a bit dodgy. Please go with your instinct. Also, although you are a 15 to 17 year old please let an adult know of your whereabouts.

Good luck :)

Hi,

it was from mandy.com, and i have researched the director and company, and judging by it , it seems pretty legitimate. They are also looking for a mother and father as well in the short film, and my parent is accompanying me too anyway :) Plus they have replied within 24 hours of my emails and said I don't need a monologue, so it could be cold-reading? :-k

Thank you for your reply :D

I think it's strange that you don't have a character breakdown, but my guess is that they will either give you some sides to learn and read or they will just ask you to do improv to see how you interact with the mother/father if they are casting that day too.
It's good that your mum is going with you, so I would just wear something casual, not too much make-up or hair too styled/fussy, and go in and do your best. Just be friendly, arrive 5/10 minutes early but be prepared to wait a short while and just enjoy the experience. Also, good luck! :)

In a short film it is quite likely that there will be very little dialogue. There might only be a line or two - or even nothing! It is quite common to be asked to improvise a scene - though they may just chat to you and ask you to read from a script.

Was there some kind of character description in the breakdown?

I always ask if I can see the screenplay beforehand if it's a short film. The answer has always been yes, but I suppose they are quite within their rights not to send it (seems daft to me not to, mind). If they give you the script (i.e. your lines) at the audition, make sure you have time to read it through. You might only need a minute or two, but make sure you get them. It is fine to be assertive. Wherever possible, look up from the script especially where the character is listening to others speaking - this (in my opinion) is where people score or otherwise in a filmed audition. It's usually much more about your truthful reactions than the way you deliver lines. You will have the chance to ask THEM about the character. Showing an interest in their vision for the film always goes down well ;)

They will have presumably chosen you for audition because they like your photo and maybe your CV so take confidence from that - you're already half way there! Be friendly and honest and be yourself. That's who they want to see!

I do wish people would give more idea about what to expect though and how they plan to run the auditions - it's not much to ask.

Good luck!

thank you! :D

it was similar to what everyone said on the thread. i came in and had to do some cold reading
i was given a script and had to read it with the director whilst i was being filmed. i actually prefer cold reading more when it comes to an audition - strange hehe :)

but it was really a great auditioning experience that i can learn from :D
