Not sure if this is in the right place so apologies if not.
Does anyone know how many children audition for syts scholarships please.
Also how many children do they take each yr ( not scholarship I know that's 3)

not sure how many went through to what rounds though, there are two lots of recalls if I remember..

with 15 usually going through to the last and final audition panel

Does everyone apply thorugh the same route then those who need assistance notify them that they would like to be considered for a scolarship or do they go through different routes?

Everyone has to apply via The Stage for Sylvia Youngs scholarship.
I don't know about other schools :-)

Does this mean you have to apply twice and audition twice if you are hoping for a scholarship, one for a place and then again for the scholership place?

This was 2010 but Ds did one audition with loads of kids

Called back to the next round ( dates are fixed in advance)

Then a nail biting wait to be called to the final 15 last audition. ( very hard) dancing singing acting and DS was the only one from 15 who hadn't been in the west end, worked in film or TV or already known to Jo Hawes.

The final 15 or 14 in our case as one boy did a video audition ( how in earth that compared to a live performance is beyond me

Every child from the very beginning was auditioning for a scholarship, we didn't get the scholarship or half scholarship but was offered a place which we clearly couldn't afford
It was an amazing experience and I was so proud of Ds who at 10 choreographed his own dance as we were not in a position for private lessons etc. we didn't have a clue what we had to do was expected of us, knew nobody... What a learning curve!

Of the parents who's children all got through to the last 15 were really helpful and friendly, many were familiar with SYTS already , one in particular who's daughter got a half scholarship was lovley !! As was her DD!


Maybe if we had a mint to spend on polishing the performance ??? Who knows?
But it was probably not the best place for DS in the end anyway
I would advise anyone to go for it!!
Nothing to lose and everything to gain
We had a tough year , place at Tring (no scholarship)
Place at Conti's (scholarship but not enough for us to manage)
It's too stressful for us to go on and on, so making do with a good associate school who give DS most of his lessons on scholarship and we are really grateful for that

Thank you Riverdancefan, it is clear in my head now. I wasn't sure if you had to apply for EITHER a paying place or a scholarship place, but it appears from what you describe that if you apply for funding and are unsuccessful you could still get offered a place.

dd's too young yet and she flits from wanting to try to not, at the moment she says she'd miss us too much, oh the love of a 10 year old (NOT NINE!), this time next year she may be desperate to get away from us!
Does any one know the criteria for funding, the only thing I found was that it was offered to those who otherewise not be able to afford to go, but surely that is relative, is there an income figure anywhere?
How does the school perform academically? Dd is very bright and a high achiever in all subjects but with only 3 days a week doing academic subjects how do they compare?

My dd had 6 amazing years at SY and was honoured enough to be head girl in yr 11...

Academically the school is brilliant, and the children have to keep their grades up or they do not get sent for auditions!
Although the academics are only on 3 days a week, they pack a lot in and the children really want to be at the school so work extremely hard...
If they miss lessons due to auditions or work, they have to catch up and are set work to do before the next lesson, so no one slips behind.
It is hard work but so rewarding...my dd would do it all over again if she could..lol

I agree with Jasmine2. My Ds is currently year 8. I've found it fine academically, in fact that was one of the reasons he went there. He has worked continuously since he started in year 7 which has covered his fees and travel. Whilst working, the teachers have set him work to do at home or for tutors whilst on tour. This was not happening at the primary school that he went to before, although they promised to set work I had to find work for him and make sure he kept up with lessons. There are so many other opportunities at the school that he wouldn't have had otherwise. It's a lovely school
