Professional Names

I've been lucky to have taken part in several short films now, so just to have to wait for the all important footage to make a showreel and apply for agencies!
In the mean time, I've been working hard in my little non-acting job to save up for spotlight, but now I'm finally ready to apply I just wondered - how important is choosing the professional actor's name?
I've been using the same name for a while now. The first part is my real name, the second part isn't. (I have a very common surname, which I think I dropped around the age of eight!) Because the name I've been using clearly has at least dropped a surname, I wondered if this actually impacts castings in anyway, or if it just doesn't really matter?
What do you reckon about professional names?
