Theatre Gala night??

Hi can anyone please tell me what Gala night means in theatre. My ds is performing in a theatre production at Christmas and we have just had a list of his show dates through. One of his dates is highlighted and it says Gala night?

It's usually more a variety type night, but in your case might it be fundraising show night, local dignitaries present?
DS has done gala nights , usually variety acts with some charity stuff thrown in and fundraising ....
