Fantastic book set in the 19th C, about the life of a prostitute called Sugar amongst others. 800 pages which hooked me from beginning to end.
Crafted this century- the language is brisk and so descriptive, I could almost smell the urine on the street and feel the mud underfoot. The characters were enigmatic and complex.
It was made into a BBC drama which I didn't see but now I want to.
Now I have finishd the book, I am almost missing my new friends! I hope there may be a follow up at some stage.
Excellent holiday read.

I read this few years ago. I enjoyed some of it but found some parts too graphic but perhaps thats my sheltered Welsh chapel upbringing The tv series was excellent, really captured the atmosphere.
The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive.
