Hi. I was just wondering if any of your dd/ds has any experience with the national youth training choir (of wales). On Monday my ds was asked to record a song (through his school) to commemorate the Tonypandy riots. The county head of music heard it and asked him to join their choir. He went this evening and she gave him an application form for the national training choir (he's 13 in January). Everything has happened so quickly. Is it worth him doing this?(The deadline was last week but she still wants him to send it off as they are looking for boys) How much of a commitment is it? As you all know our ds/dd's are sooooo busy anyway- if it is important and a good thing for him to do then we will gladly support him but we don't want him taking on more commitment if it is unnecessary.
Sorry for such a long message but i don't know anyone who has experience with this or i would pester them

I think it would be great for ds but like you said ds already very busy. Some choirs they ask for you to be able to sight read up to a certain level but I am not sure about this one. Do you have to be 13 to join ? Good luck.

Not sure what age it is for the county choir-think that may even be 11/12 but you have to be 13 (by august next year) to join the youth training choir. My concern is that his voice hasn't broken yet. We could encourage him to do this and who knows if he's going to have a voice when it breaks. Should he do it anyway because he loves to sing or should we wait and see what voice he is left with and then apply (but who knows when thats going to happen?)Aaaarrrrgh.

When I sang in the Surrey County Youth Choir you had to be in Secondary School to attend, it was amazing, we went to Italy, Germany, Hungary, France, all sorts of places and a few times a year we'd go on residentials, we recorded a Christmas CD in August once. And I got to sing at the Royal Albert Hall several times.

Thankyou, I needed someone to tell me something like that. You obviously gained much from it and if my ds has only half of that, it'll be worth sending him. They have a residential in February and are singing in the Millenium Centre in December. Think we've made our mind up. It's too good an opportunity for him to miss.

I really had some of the best times of my teenage years there, totally loved every minute and the friends I made. Was amazing

We sent the form off today My ds said it was something he wanted to do and thought it would be good experience for him. He was quite mature about it really. I was the one who was dithering
