DD Flo is a massive Les Mis fan, and also of Alfie Boe who is currently playing Jean Valjean at Queens Theatre. Matt Lucas performed M. Thenardier until recently. Both excellent performances, so the film has a lot to live up to - not to mention all the amazing JVJs, Javerts and Thenardiers who have gone before. If the singing isn't up to scratch there will be a lot of criticism from Les Mis diehards - my 9 year old included!
For those who aren't familiar with the production, if it follows the theatre version there's an amazing opportunity for a talented young man to play Gavroche - can't wait to see who is cast for that one.
Young Cosette solos 'Castle on a Cloud'. Flo would give her best Moshie Monster cards to play Cosette, stage or film, but I understand that at 4ft 6pm she's already over height for it.
Young Eponine is a non-speaking role on stage.
If they follow the book, the Thenardiers have one more daughter.
And I'd imagine that they'll need a few more kids for the film, just as part of the general population (extras?)
The students have some stunning musical numbers, so there will be some cracking roles there - especially Marius, older Cosette's love interest.
Hope this helps - and looking forward to hearing more as the casting progresses

It may not be a musical! We have an old black and white film of Les Mis and there is not a single note sung. Victor Hugo wrote the story, cameron macintosh made it into a musical.

You're right, there are several non-musical film versions of Les Mis
But I understand this one
is the musical. Cam Mac has been heavily involved and both Helena BC and Russell Crowe have been spotted in the audience at Queens in recent months.
Alfie Boe's fans are in a state of mourning that he hasn't been cast as JVJ.
I'm beginning to wonder whether this could be my specialist subject on mastermind!

More details in Baz's column in the Mail in a interview with Hugh Jackman, it's definitely a musical:
Tom Hooper’s version of the musical Les Miserables, begins shooting in March, with plans to rehearse in the capital in January and February. Hooper is keeping his options open about whether the cast will pre-record songs.
‘There’s the option of recording live or lip-synching and I’ve been down the lip-synching route with the video of Oklahoma!’ Hugh told me.
‘I think singing live might work better with this, but Tom won’t make a decision just yet.’
Hooper is assembling his own version of the screenplay and overseeing the casting of other key roles, having already decided on Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and possibly Helena Bonham Carter.
Reports about Emma Watson playing Cosette are incorrect. She won’t be doing the film.
Hooper’s also looking for 17 and 18-year-olds to play the student revolutionaries — not actors in their 20s.
Hugh hopes to work with Hooper for four or five days next month in London to refine the Jean Valjean character he’ll play in Les Mis.

Any ideas about who might be cast as Gavroche for the movie? Or how they'll go about it?
As I don't have any ds, only dd, I'm just an interested observer on this one, but I know Robert Madge was well thought of for his part in the Les Mis 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 last October. Maybe he's too old for the role now.
Are any NAPM's keeping an eye on this for your ds?

would love to, my DS sings with an amazing unbroken voice, but is always too tall for anything and I don't reckon this would be any different :-(

Didn't 17 year old Joe Jonas play Marious in a US version?

Nick Jonas played Marius for 5 weeks in the West End version & then did the 25th anniversary, he was 17 at the time.
