He is in the fortunate position of having offers from Bird, Laine and London Studio Centre. We have done some homework and know people at some of the schools (and there are definitely financial considerations!), but we are struggling to get a handle on the vibe of each school - and I know it is said that some schools suit a certain type (thinking of Laine in particular). Would anyone with a child currently at Laine be happy to DM with me so that I can ask some questions and get a parent's view?

Thanks Lakeviewp! I couldn't see it but have now messaged you, so hopefully that will make it through. x

Read College do a fab audition day! Classes are small. You are welcome to message me for more info.

Read College is very good from our experience. A lot of of 'top' ones are considered money spinners and very few students get taken onto the BA courses.

You might also consider theMTA . DD is in the final year (of 2) vocational course They are still auditioning as they don't start until October. Free auditions and feedback with decision on the day. It'd been excellent training with loads of opportunities for public performances.

Hi, my DD did a foundation year and it helped her immensely. She did her foundation at her top choice school, and is now there doing her degree. So while I can't tell you which ones to avoid I would say look at places she would like to do a degree at as it can be a good stepping stone to their degree courses. I know that foundation auditions are still open at my DD's school as they are still advertising, so hopefully there are other too. Does she have any preferences?

She’s going to arts Ed audition on Thurs which also for BA and foundation. She had recalls at Leeds (on reserve) gsa and royal Welsh and loved the last 2 places but didn’t get in this year, we feel she’s close so want to make the most of this ‘gap’ year. She wants to end up somewhere known for strong acting led MT as supposed to the more dance led.
If she got a recall at GSA and Royal Welsh I would definitely try and audition for their foundation courses. My DD got rejected from GSA, applied for the foundation and got in and is now there on the degree. I don't know much about Royal Welsh but GSA is definitely an acting led MT rather than dance. Mountview and Arts Ed are both good choices for acting led MT too. What about EDA? Their gap year course seems to have success at getting students into degree courses. I know they do a lot of dance, but I know at least 2 have got into GSA this year, not bad considering GSA are only taking 20 overall. Maybe worth looking at? Good luck for Arts Ed!

Some foundation courses like ArtsEd are funded almost in full by a student loan whereas others like Reed and EDA are not eligible. Only a percentage of students are offered a place on a degree due to the incredibly high numbers of applicants for the top colleges, the high standard required at audition and the diverse personalities wanted on the course. I don't think that makes these courses money spinners. Most foundation courses quote 100% success rate for their students getting onto three year courses somewhere. It's always going to be tougher for girls simply due to numbers applying and tougher for those wanting MT or acting courses with smaller cohorts rather than dance courses. But a foundation offer from a reputable college means the college can see the potential to succeed in the industry so is certainly worth considering if funds allow.

Thank you, will definitely consider Arts Ed foundation if we get an offer. Is Read considered a good foundation by the top colleges do you think? Desperate to make the right choice as the money will be a stretch! The other thing we’re considering is just a gap year and continuing with her acting, dance and singing lessons but that’s only going to be a few hours a week which worries me. Is that going to be enough for better outcomes next year, my gut says no.

Have sent a DM. Most students need a foundation MT unlike dance dominated schools where students are often ready after the first year. Schools say 100% success rate but this will include students doing another year there, a foundation course, a uni course, basically anything.

Hi- Dd has received an email this morning, along the lines of….. “ all auditions now finished, people having been off with covid, but now back & ready to start working through the ‘talent’ list until the money runs out! “
So looking like things should start to happen soon, I guess.

My DD has been on the two year sixth form at Read and in the second year they share many classes with the ‘foundies’. It is a small college with lots of individual attention many of the staff teach part time and are indicated professionals as well. It is well regarded and everyone in sixth form has at least one offer from a top level college most of them have more than one.
Whilst the foundation course does not have funding they have their own Access to the Arts fund and if eligible the entire fees can be covered.
Throughout all the lockdowns they continue to run a full timetable over teams. Good student support and individual attention.
