GCSE music

Post by Hilltop »

Is GCSE music useful for training/career in musical theatre? DD is resistant to choosing it but I feel it may be useful though don’t really know! Obviously her decision in the end.

DS did music GCSE but I wouldn't say that it has been useful. He is training at Bird and has used none of the knowledge from the GCSE
The thing that he has found useful is his music lessons he had when he was younger as he can accompany himself whilst singing and also plays for other students

My two have both done/are doing GCSE music but its not necessary for MT training at all.

If, however a child does not otherwise play an instrument or rad music then it does (in theory at least) teach you the basics of music theory/score reading which is a really useful skill for MT singers.

DD is taking music with voice as her instrument but to be honest not really necessary. She has really enjoyed the GCSE though and was able to look at composition so it gave her another string to her bow performance wise. She has been told she could do AS / A level music without it as long as she has Grade 5 theory.

Thanks for the replies. DD has been taking piano lessons for the last year on the advice of her singing teacher, which she is enjoying, so I think I’ll encourage her to continue with them then if she doesn’t chose music as a GSCE
