DDI DDE training whilst on 3 Yr diploma training

Post by katkit »

Hi, DD will be hopefully starting 3 year diploma in dance/MT in September, has had offers now waiting for DaDA news.

Some of the colleges she's been offered a place at offer DDI/DDE training alongside normal diploma training, some don't (Cambridge BodyWorks do not). I didn't know about DDI or DDE (!) which I should have done, but DD has more singing experience previously than dance.

My question is to those who know more about this dance training than me, is; How important is this option when choosing the right college for your DC? i.e. is it something that can be picked up easily later on if she chooses the one college that doesn't offer this dance training?

Thanks :)

I understand they are often an optional (paid for) extra - few colleges include them

Is she likely to want to teach dance in the future? If so they are important......DD wants to do them as she intends to teach 'when she is old, 30 or something'

DDE - Level 4 Diploma in Dance Education

DDI - Level 3 Diploma in Dance Instruction

Here is a list of ISTD approved colleges offering DDI/DDE training http://www.istd.org/courses-and-trainin ... e-centres/
As Katymac has said they will be a paid for extra - but you are able to do at a later date once training complete :)
I also think you have to be trained to intermediate level before you can teach - but I may have that wrong, I'm sure there will be people on here with more accurate info! x

My dd will be doing DDI/DDE teacher training alongside dance classes at our local dance college. The main reason is that she doesn't want to do A levels. She will continue with all her Advanced Ballet classes plus other dance classes and have Health and Safety training plus the DDI/DDE.
Several of the teachers at the college have completed the DDI/DDE training after performing so it is possible to do it later. However, one of dd's teachers said if dd gets a place for further dance training in the future and wants to work, she can get paid more as a qualified teacher....definite bonus, I think :)
Dd took her Intermediate ballet exam (RAD) 2 years ago.
I also think that the qualification needs to be topped up...dd will start her DDI in the first year of college but to complete the qualification she would need to stay at the college for a further 2 years. This is because she has to work for a certain amount of time before being awarded the full qualification. Many dancers top this up after performing.

Thanks everyone for your information, it's all really helpful. There is so much to know, and research still!

Okay, so I am sure I'm thinking this out far too soon, but what can my DD do on top of gaining 3 year level 6 diplomas in MT/Dance, to prepare for teaching in future?

This is probably difficult to answer, as there would be different levels of teaching. So, any info is much appreciated. If she has a BA, would she need to do PGCE to work in private performing arts schools?

Sorry, I meant to say if the focus was on singing, or MT in general?

If she does a level 6 in 3 years, then a year to top it up to a degree then a PGCE - she can teach in a school (so 5 yrs)

There is another one not PGCE which enables her to teach adults (night school/further education I think)

How this relates to 'Music' or MT I don't know

& also you can teach 'by license' I think as an alternative route (but I don't really understand it - I did my EYP instead & then the Government changed their minds and an EYP was no longer to be QTS  ](*,) )

I'm not helping much - sorry

You can teach in a private school or academy with
out a pgce or qts.

Katymac - yes I work in a local authority school as well and agree with you regarding what is required to teach in this setting.

WelshMum - many thanks - that is good to know that the rules differ for private schools, which is the case for the main acredited MT/dance schools, should DC go down that route in later years.
