Drama school applications for next year

Post by JTBmum »

Hi, at what stage do people start looking at Drama Schools. Ds is doing AS. When they finish AS they are encouraged to start writing personal statements etc for Uni. If you are considering applying to drama school, do they have open days like Unis?

Also, has anyone ever looked into studying acting in the US? If so, what are the best colleges?

Cheers

Some of the drama schools do have open days - DD went to visit Man Met, LIPA and ALRA North. Some drama schools you apply for through UCAS so you have to think about that personal statement and others you apply to direct to! Its worth starting to think about things after AS levels,. but I think I would apply relatively late. DD was encouraged by school to have all her applications in by the end of Oct half term and I think she would have benefited from auditioning later ...

When applying to drama schools outside of UCAS it's better to stagger the online applications because you can be sent an audition date within 2 weeks ! So better to have at least chosen monologues by the time you make an application ! November December is the time most of my dds friends tended to apply, and those who applied as soon as applications opened got their audition dates before christmas
Its good to check the deadlines for applications because if you leave it late in applying it will take a while for your audition date to come through, because they tend to get a deluge of applications to process the nearer it gets to their deadlines !
It's good to go along and see the end of year shows at each drama school too so you can get a feel for the school, but there are open days for example at Guildhall, you have to pre-register. And of course those through UCAS have open days like normal Unis do.
And at mostly £50.00 an audition too , its better to go being well prepared, so you feel you've given it your best !

Hi, if you are looking at RADA, Bristol Old Vic, LAMDA, Guildhall, and Central, is it only Central that is a UCAS application?

At the moment, yes .... but keep an eye on the situation as this year both the RSAMD and RWCMD started applications through UCAS for the first time so it is possible other schools may follow ...

LIPA and Drama Centre London are also via UCAS and you can apply direct too
