how long to wait before asking for feedback on an audition?

Post by mummyofmylittlestar »

Hiya my little dd went for an audition for a student film on Friday of last week and as they said a few days I am assuming she didn't get it. How long do you think is reasonable before asking if they would mind giving us some feedback. It is only her second filming audition and so we are very new to this and the protocol normally followed. Do you think it is ok to ask for feedback? I am just thinking she may be able to improve her audition techniques. thanks xx

Hi there

I think it is entirely reasonable to ask students for feedback from the audition. It should definitely be a give and take situation with student films and although I wouldn't recommend chasing a professional casting director for feedback (though occasionally they do offer it), I think student film makers should be prepared to give you their time as you are prepared to give yours. You may need to prepared for the request to be overlooked or ignored though, as they will be busy with other pre-production issues and may not give it the priority it deserves. You also need to be prepared for the feeback to be unhelpful...

Feedback is often quite difficult to give, especially if you don't know much about actors or acting (which is the case for some student film makers). They might be able to tell you something like "she was too tall", "she didn't look enough like the person we cast as the mother" or something similar, but they might find it difficult to articulate any other reason she was unsuccessful (if she was - there's a chance they are still pondering the casting!).

Thought your daughter was brilliant at the audition I saw heard her do I don't think you have any problems. Also some students are a little slow at getting back to you, don't give up yet.
