Children working away from home - any advice/tips?

DS (11) has been offered something that would involve filming abroad for a few weeks. Work and family commitments mean that we can't travel with him so he will be chaperoned and tutored.
None of his previous work has involved time away from home, so just wondering if anyone with experience of a child working abroad for an extended period has any advice or tips. How do you manage spending money, for example? Is it best to get a laptop for sending schoolwork back and forth rather than lugging lots of books?
Any voices of experience would be welcome!
