Does anyone know anything about taxable expense for the performer?

Postby Katymac » Mon Jun 11, 2018 9:30 pm

I know the basics (keep receipts, only business expenses etc)

But what about dance shoes - are they allowed? Clothing appears to be a nightmare - stage clothing is OK but (as I understand) only 'costumes' so no street wear (commercial) or trainers?

Food while they are out working or at auditions? or just the standard £5 unreceipted subsistance

Travel is easy - no car so train/bus fares plus an emailed monthly oyster statement

what about Make-up?

Help I don't want to pay an accountant - the actual accounts should be easy enough if I can just understand what is allowed and what isn't (running nursery accounts was much easier!!)

I would suggest you google performers business expenses - performanceaccountancy and peterjarman are 2 to look out for. I would also suggest you or your DD or both join The Hustle on facebook and londondance.com .

I don't think you can claim for any clothes, shoes or make up that could be worn elsewhere and so have dual purpose and by elsewhere I mean other than 'performance' or 'the job' as I don't think any clothing for auditions or rehearsals can be claimed for anyway.

I'm no expert at all and I would check out what I have just said. I just remember when my DD sought the advice of an accountant friend, it was only a couple of items that were specified in writing in DD's contract that she had to provide herself that could be claimed for.

Your DD will obviously need to register as self employed if she hasn't already.

Good luck.

Give Equity a call. Pretty sure they have a list from what I remember. When I was performing I remember claiming for dance wear etc. Not sure if it’s the same.

Basically if the item could only be used for work then it's claimable. For example tap shoes or a costume wouldn't really be worn in day to day life but general clothing obviously could be.
