Dada funding for 2021/2022

Post by Tess50 »

Hi all,

Excuse my naivety but Matthew Bourne posted this and I'm just wondering does this affect the funding for Dada's - Extremely alarming & disappointing news learning about the government's proposed funding cuts: 50% cut for Dance and other creative subjects at Higher Education level, due to these subjects 'not being among its strategic priorities'. If you already have your Dada I thought that once your income remains relatively the same for the 3 years of the course that your keep the Dada but will this change affect this ?? I'm not very up to date with it all - my daughter has her Dada with Performers so just checking - many thanks

No, it doesn’t affect DaDa funded courses, just degrees.

From my reading of it the extra money that universities get for delivering courses with higher contact hours will be cut in subjects such as the performing arts. Medical based courses allocation will be increased.

There are 5 price groups according to cost of delivering subjects. Most medical courses are high cost subjects in groups A & B. They get more money per student than from tuition fees alone to as they cost more to deliver.

Performing arts subjects are in group C1 alongside nursing and computer subjects. The latter two will have funding increased but perf arts funding will be cut from £243 per full time equivalent student to half that. They will become part of a sub group C1.2.

There will be some extra funding for institutions deemed to be specialist world class providers. These are currently
University of the Arts, London
Conservatoire for Dance & Drama
Cortauld Institute of Art
Cranfield University
Guildhall School of Music & Drama
Harper Adams University
Institute of Cancer Research
London School of Tropical Medicine
National Film & TV School
Royal Academy of Music
Central School of Speech & Drama
Royal College of Art
Royal College of Music
Royal Northern College of Music
Royal Vetinary College
Trinity Laban

Thank you for clarifying this. Interesting list. Wonder if any extra money will be available at those colleges for musical theatre! (I doubt if all those courses are classed as world class!) Sadly there are already colleges cutting contact hours or having to charge top up fees to ensure a high level of provision. I think that DADAs for MT will soon be a thing of the past with all colleges eventually only offering degrees. I believe Ballet and Music will always be considered more elite and attract more support and funding through the MDS scheme. I can't help thinking our government feels that anyone can bash out a song and dance! In the meantime we await DADA and funding info here for this September! [-o<

My guess is that the musical theatre colleges don't qualify for small, specialist provider status because the majority are part of a much larger universities eg GSA = Surrey University & RADA = University of London, whereas the music conservatoires confer their own degrees.

So it will hit that sector much harder.

I have just read through the consultation and it is worrying.
Interesting points about London weighting and the boom in 18 yo between 2020 - 2030, also that mental health funding will be increased.

Hasn't anyone given thought that many don't want to be a nurse, dentist or midwife? Should we be expecting another biblical plague and therefore need to to expand our NHS?

As soon as mine started at GSA on BAMT in September I have worried about cuts, as part of the University of Surrey they come under their umbrella most of the time which has been fantastic, as a conservatoire they also have some independence but the dance degree closed, maybe this is their final year - not sure.
I think that DADA's will eventually be cut - I can't see them continuing for much longer.
