Probably a bit of a silly question! My DD is doing the pre-audition course at Urdang and they have sent a list of monologues. It just got me thinking, in a real audition do you have to know the Monologue off by heart? Are you allowed it with you to refer to even? Thanks.

Off by heart & the song too
Plus an extra of each in case they decide what you picked wasn't 'appropriate'
But generally they are quite short

I don't think that you can fully convey the power and meaning of a monologue unless you know it inside out. Everyone should have at least 2 monologues up their sleeves...

You also need to be able to do it when re- directed

& DD's teacher said you should be able to have a good idea of the play it came from and an idea of the character you are talking about and how they feature in the play

Don't think you can do a monologue without knowing the play and character etc. You need to know why the character is doing, saying and feeling that way.

Although its not monologues, I agree with Welsh Mum, sometimes my dd gets an audition piece for self tape and there is no back story or clue about the character other that what is in the 2 or 3 pages.

She should know them inside out. The Mono Box offer a cheap, supportive option to get feedback on your monologues in advance of auditions.
