My DD went to RCSSD. I think they audition more or less everyone. They are v flexible when it comes to A level grades etc and emphasis is on ability/potential not academic success.

Maybe what they are looking for is for DD to show what she has participated in (acting wise) and what she's seen and what she wants to get out of training with them?

Also I was shocked to see that Mountview charge £3,000 more per year for their courses and that you can only get £6,000 support. Made me check the others for costs and Govt support more carefully :)

Yes put as much as possible in the personal statement about experiences etc. Not just participating but they also like you to have watched stuff as well, and be able to talk about it.

The main thing is the audition. They have a list of classical monologues to choose from. They decide what pathway suits you at audition, then you are recalled for that one. There is a cut after the morning, an afternoon session then a follow up day.

My DD loved it there. Right in the heart of London, and she loads of great opportunities there.

When applications say "passport style photo" do they mean passport sized or literally a photo which would be suitable for a passport ie no smiling, no hair on face, etc.

They mean passport sized, its usually just a passport photo attached to the application form, you usually have to send in other photos as well :D

Bit confused with Bird applications. Seems there is a postal application form that you can download but no online application process. Or am I missing something? There is an "FAQ for online applications" page. It does refer in the questions to Sept 15 entry so I wonder if they did have online applications last year and had problems so haven't continued it this year?

I'll phone tomorrow and check and will post what I find out.

Thanks Pearl. They had an online application process this year apparently but were having tech problems so they've taken the link away. It may re-appear but they don't know when so are advising to submit by post for now.

Bird, Urdang, Arts Ed, GSA, Millennium, Chichester Uni, Central, Mountview ... Any more colleges that can be recommended for musical theatre, where loans are potentially available before my dd and I start to apply this weekend!? We're looking to do as many as possible!

I can't recommend but trinity does a 3 year musical theatre degree covered by government funding. Other ideas: Italian conti, Wilkes , LSMT ,Glasgow , MTA. Not sure how funding works with these .

London Studio Centre offer degree courses so student loans are available, however I think you can only borrow £6000 the same as for Mountview and Arts Ed.

Good luck to your DD

Other degree courses are London College of music, Trinity Laban and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Bodyworks are looking to offer a degree but not sure if it's starting next year. Good luck!

The only tip that I can give is that ultimately if your dc is looking to make a career in musical theatre it is definitely worth looking in to the school's success rates for employability. Check out the cast of west end shows and touring productions and see where they trained . That is not to say that other schools won't provide good training . Another tip we were given is to check whether they are accredited by drama UK . Spotlight were adamant about that when I spoke with them.
