Dance and period pain

Post by woody »

Does anyone have any suggestions to help please.

My dd doesn't usually suffer, but every so often she will have a really painful period, and feel quite ill with the pain, and gets queasy too. She takes nurofen for it, but it doesn't help all that much, and can't really clutch a hot water bottle while she is dancing!

She can't always miss class/rehearsals/performances, and needs to find a way of managing it.

Any advice would be appreciated!

My mum used Veganin and this worked for her.
My older dd went to our GP (she tried paracetamol, neurofen, veganin - not at the same time!) and was prescribed a tablet to take when her period started and then 3 times a day for several days. This lightened her period, stopped the painful cramps and stopped her feeling sick. If this hadn't worked, our GP suggested the contraceptive pill.
Hope this helps.

Please take her to a sympathetic GP as there are options...
a stronger prescribable non-steroidal anti-inflammatory may help for short treatment times only, and you can combine with paracetamol as well as long as she is able to take both.
I don't know how old she is ? - there are options with certain pills to ease symptoms.
I really really sympathise, period pains were the blight of my young life, they were debilitating and excruciating and I will never forget how horrible they were...

Thanks, we will try that, although she struggles with swallowing tablets and gags on them, which is why she usually has nurofen meltlets. She is 15.

I used to get awful period pain too, and my GP put me on the pill to help, which it did to a small extent. This was years ago though!!

I'd really been hoping she wouldn't suffer as well, as it is horrible :(

My DD went through this as well. It can really be debilitating; over the counter tablets had little effect on her. I remember her fainting a couple of times with the pain. Eventually when she was 17 she went on the pill and this solved all her problems - I wish we had done it sooner but it seemed a big step. However it was a godsend when she went off to rain full time as you just can't have time off every month! She is now 23 and has come off it and her periods are fine now :)

Thanks Welsh Mum, my dd can feel very faint too - although she hasn't passed out she's been fairly close once or twice. Most months are ok, but 2 or 3 times a year she gets a bad one and really suffers.

It helps to know that something can be done, as she wants to be a dancer, and hopes to be in full-time training by this time next year.

Glad your dd is now ok.

I used to be like that - turned grey looking and had painful cramps that 4 nurofen with an hour wouldn't touch. I started taking Zinc and Magnesium and after about 3-5 months the difference was immense. There is a product caled MagnesiumOK that I think you can still but at Superdrug that also helped. I sympathise xx
