Where have all the trolls come from?

Post by tikka »

Haven't we had a lot of rubbish people posting adverts on here over the last couple of days? I know its lots of work for the mods to have to keep zapping them.

What if all first posts had to get past the moderator - don't know if that's a possibility, or how much work it would create. Perhaps we can help somehow.

Love this site, just wish people would respect it.

If you want a laugh have a read of the names of some of the websites listed on the members info page - I'll certainly know where to go now if I want any dodgy pharmaceutical products LOL!

Gosh, its getting worse!

If there is anything I can do to help let me know - not a computer whizz but I could spare a bit of time if there were simple tasks that needed doing.

Ditto ... I am a freelance writer so usually online during working hours and could happily zap spam if needed

I just wonder what they are trying to achieve given it is usually a ream of miss spelled gobble dee gook. If you actually read it, is does put one in mind of the ramblings of a very broken mind.

Has anyone else noticed that all these odd people have a birthday within a couple of days of joining? Maybe a good way to weed them out before they post.

I've noticed! And it always seems to be their 25th, 26th or 24th birthday for some reason. They also have really odd names. I don't know if this is some sort of practical joke...are you sure you don't need any help with this busybusybusy?

I think we are all getting better at reporting them, i went to report a post this morning that only had 7 views and it had already been reported! So I think we are all on the ball with it and eventually they might give up!

Don't forget that very rarely are these done by hand, they are computer programmes searching the net for key words - that's why some seem to have no obvious link, but if you go back through the topic you find the cause. This is a bit of a silly example, but if one post says "I had to strip off 15 layers before we got back to the real wood on the dance floor" and somebody else mentions "I know, but the wooden floors can sometimes be dangerous I had to gently tease out a splinter ..." then the spiderbots put together links to sites we don't want to know about. They're very clever, and can even produce posts that sort of seem to fit, but don't actually say anything - BUT the damage is done, the site gets spidered (monitored) more regularly, and sometimes after a day or two, and the topic forgotten, another random post is initiated and signature lines added that provide links, which themselves may be picked up by other bot programmes, thinking the site has content it doesn't, and this simply serves to get the dodgy site higher in Google's rankings. It is BIG business, and the software is getting cleverer all the time. Any forum that likes to have open access to attract members gets hit - and there is so little anyone can really do, apart from moderate each new sign up before people can see their stuff - and this is not very good from the user's point of view. On other forums I moderate, this kind of mod work is very tedious, but the mods do appreciate people hitting the report button. Better safe than sorry!

I can stand the rubbish about medication , or how to use your computer/camera/mobile. But the porn stuff really did get me. This is a site than can be viewed by children and I accept that maybe some mindless computer or person may be operating but I still think it's out of order. I often am on line late at night because being retired I don't have to rise early. A lot of stuff I've highlighted is put in late, (so maybe someone in a different time zone) but fortunately not so likely to be generally viewed before the invigilators get to work.
