crimson petal and the white- Michael Faber

Post by siohip »

Fantastic book set in the 19th C, about the life of a prostitute called Sugar amongst others. 800 pages which hooked me from beginning to end.
Crafted this century- the language is brisk and so descriptive, I could almost smell the urine on the street and feel the mud underfoot. The characters were enigmatic and complex.
It was made into a BBC drama which I didn't see but now I want to.
Now I have finishd the book, I am almost missing my new friends! I hope there may be a follow up at some stage.
Excellent holiday read.

I read this few years ago. I enjoyed some of it but found some parts too graphic    but perhaps thats my sheltered Welsh chapel upbringing :D The tv series was excellent, really captured the atmosphere.
The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive.
