Re: Acting - an option only for the privileged?

It must help to get a foot in the door to begin with but then it's down to their own talent as they often have to prove themselves. I don't think they last very long if they can't cut the mustard so to speak. I do believe, however, that the kids who can afford private lessons alongside school are g...

Re: Which agency for theatre, tv rather than commercials?

DS's school were supportive during Matilda and Billy, in Yrs 7 and 8, then became less so. A couple of times they put absences down as unauthorised because we had given 'less than a week's notice' (!), so we needed to keep castings in school time to a minimum, so like FredaBloggs we decided that TVC...

Re: Which agency for theatre, tv rather than commercials?

My DS was with RKA and we never had a TVC casting - had theatre, TV, film.

Re: Fees to join agency

To join as a child you have to have an agent, but if you're no longer with an agency or between agents you can stay on there and even renew as long as you pay your annual fee. If you don't pay, your membership is suspended, but I had a helpful email this week saying that if DS, who doesn't currently...

Re: Auditioning for SEPT 2018

"No more AS levels, so people starting off with four in Yr12, with the probable intention of dropping one in Yr13, will no longer apply" Actually that's not strictly true and will depend on the schools as to if their students still take AS level. The difference is that the AS is no longer...

Re: Matilda Tour

From what I remember, rehearsals aren't covered by licence, so you should be OK. Best of luck to everyone going for this.

Re: Rearranging audition times

In my experience, it's generally a case of go at the time given or risk not getting another opportunity. Do you have an agent? It's generally worth keeping them informed about your availability. DS's has an online calendar that we update - on the one occasion he wasn't able to go, we grovelled; he w...

Re: New Spotlight and Equity membership criteria

One more question, if you don't mind. I see that four professional speaking credits in full-length theatre, film or TV also entitle an adult to membership. Is it allowed if these credits, or some of them, are gained as a child? I don't think it says that they can't.
Thanks in advance.

Re: New Spotlight and Equity membership criteria

No an agent can't get them onto Spotlight, the onus is still on the performer to get the credits/training. I know that I had an email exchange last year with an agent who had tried to get their client onto Spotlight, but Spotlight weren't budging on their criteria. As a result the performer did los...

Re: New Spotlight and Equity membership criteria

I know from first hand experience that many agents will not sign a client if they're unable to be a member of Spotlight - as they're too hard a sell. I have a question re this - I thought that if a client has an agent, they could then be on Spotlight, whatever their training, and that these criteri...

Re: Matilda Tour

It's a difficult one. DS was in Billy Elliot for all of year 8, spending most of his time in the 'Billy house' but attending his regular school when he was home - which averaged out to three days every three weeks, whereas with a tour I think he'd been there a bit more. He did find it difficult both...

Re: NYT

Talya - are the shows evenings? So he may not need to miss school? What a shame if not - that will surely affect so many students. No, it said they'd need to be available daytimes too, for teching etc, some days at least. D'S was then recalled for another show, with better dates, and then had a sec...

NYT Playing Up DEADLINE TUESDAY

I just saw this, so there isn't long to apply. Playing Up is an OCN Level 3 accredited 10 month drama training programme, offering young people aged 19 - 24 who are not in Education Employment or Training the opportunity to gain an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Theatre Arts, which is equival...
