Self tapes and monologues - a bit of market research!

Hello NAPMers! May I pick your brains? I’ve been contributing to this forum on and off for several years – though I haven’t visited all that much over the last couple of years. I’ve now moved more or less full time to Spain – and very lovely it is too. You can find out more about me on http://www.he...

Re: Spotlight

I'm not quite sure what you are asking? :) I would have a word with your agent to see whether those on pencil have yet been released. Sometimes the CDs are slow at letting the agents know when a final decision has been made (sometimes, unfortunately, I think they just don't do it) but your agent can...

Re: FAME STREET/ EXTRA WORK

Avoid Fame Street or any similar sites. There is no way that mainstream casting directors use a site like this. There are red flags galore. It's just not how the business works. Getting extra work might be possible for people of any age - but do look into what it means in terms of very late notice o...

Re: How long to accept representation offer?

I would write immediately to tell them you are delighted to hear they are interested and that you would like to arrange to meet them to discuss the offer of representation. You don't have to accept the offer until after you've met them.

Re: Rearranging audition times

Concentrating on your exams at this stage is absolutely the right thing to do. If you're still in education, this is NOT yet your "career" - so other things take precedence. Even when it is your career, there will (I hope) still be things more important than acting. The important thing is ...

Re: New Spotlight and Equity membership criteria

I think that without Equity, performers would be much, much worse off. Equity is only as strong as its members. Most of us benefit from the work it does, even if we're not members. If it dwindles, there will be no one available to fight our corner in times of need or to push to maintain and improve ...

Re: New Spotlight and Equity membership criteria

Paulears: "No conventional university course has that number of contact hours" - well, precisely. That's why they won't be regarded as proper practical training for the profession. You don't have to have formal training to get into Equity - you can get your membership from working too (one...

Re: Rearranging audition times

I would always consult your agent. Sometimes a different time is easily arranged - often it really isn't. An agent could become irritated if you frequently asked them to ask for a different time. It makes the agent look disorganised as well as you. If your agent knows in advance the times that you c...

Re: Interesting Twitter convo re acting without drama school

I think most of it is reasonable. There are NO routes that guarantee success - but if you hope to do more than scrabble about on the edges doing profit share or work for expenses only , then training at an established school *could* give you a better start. For one thing it gives you Spotlight entry...

Re: New Spotlight and Equity membership criteria

Confusion over Spotlight arises because *children's* agents CAN get clients on Spotlight in the Young Performers section.

It's different for adult performers (and absolutely, any decent agent will want their clients to be Spotlight eligible).

Re: Contact with your agent

I think it does depend on your agent and the sort of relationship you have with them. I tend not to contact my agent unless I have something industry related to say - unless there's been a very long gap. I use email rather than phone -unless of course there's something urgent to convey or I have a q...

Re: Funding the future - Straight Acting

If funds are tight (and they are for all but the most wealthy, aren't they?!) then I wouldn't bother with a foundation course. Schools look for - and are brilliant at spotting - potential. You don't need to have done a foundation course to get into drama school. Although many students are older than...

Re: Starnow Audition for a Scholarship Award

Who/what is the scholarship award for? I think you are very right to be cautious. I've come across this sort of thing before as a hook to get people to "audition " for really, really expensive part time "courses" and "showcases opportunities". They hook people by flatte...

Re: Taking your own headshots?

There's no harm in trying your own shots (I've seen some excellent ones - and some very poor ones) but get an honest, knowledgeable opinion about the result. Great headshots are hard to achieve and they're not something to skimp on. You never get a second chance to make a good first impression :) A l...
