Re: So much has changed & so much is the same

Almost 2 years ago DD auditioned at Bird, Urdang, Laines (level 6) Masters (not sure about their diploma) and Brit School (level 3). We had to pay about £75 each (I think?) to hold places at Urdang and Laines.....Masters don't have a funding audition because they don't offer DaDA awards (but do offe...

Re: Which are the top Musical Theatre Schools? and why?

I completely agree with everyone above......any of the accredited colleges offer great training, have excellent teaching staff and access to top choreographers! Beyond that it's up to the student to make the very most of the opportunities available there!! That's why the "gut" feeling is s...

Re: Does anyone know anything about 'The Centre' in Rocheste

DD is also a dancer that wanted to do Musical Theatre....in fact the majority of her friends were exactly that too!! Yes, most of the auditionees were 18 or older....and there are more over 18 year olds at her college but there are still plenty who did get in at 16! Inevitably, some did not, but tho...

Re: Does anyone know anything about 'The Centre' in Rocheste

Problems for us were: a) Funding....we couldn't consider anything unless DD had a DaDA award, and although The Centre do offer some scholarships, it wouldn't have been enough for us!! b) Transport...it wasn't very accessible. c) We were told that they did have a stronger reputation for teacher train...

Re: Does anyone know anything about 'The Centre' in Rocheste

Hi Katymac I don't know a lot, but one of DD's previous dance teachers did some of her teacher training with Karen King and was hugely complimentary about her! Dd did consider it initially based on her teacher's opinion, but decided not to audition there in the end!! I don't know if that's really an...

Re: What do you think are the best dance colleges?

Hi Danceismylifeok I don't think you should have any worries about Urdang....it is considered one of the best London colleges to go to at the moment, and they have an excellent graduate employment record. If you look through the cast biographies for any of the West End shows you will find former Urd...

Re: Why do dances wear their tights over their leotards?

I don't think DD would dream of doing it for ballet (her ballet teachers have always been very strict too!!).........but for jazz, commercial, contemporary and tap, it's what they are told to do by the teachers at college!! So definitely not with pink ballet tights, only with black tights over eithe...

Re: Billy Elliot - PG rating?

I'm really interested by this debate.....my DD was in BE for a year so obviously we had the same conversation with her and her younger brother and they understood (at 12 and 10) the idea of only using bad language on stage not in real life....however, I was very concerned about my elderly mother and...

They like the way it looks! And anything that makes legs look longer is definitely going to be a winner!!!

Re: Auditions for next year

Yes...my DD's experience is for dance/musical theatre courses (Bird, Laines, Urdang etc....)...but I think that's also what Katymac's DD is applying for? :? :?

Definitely second taking additional song options.....DD was asked if she had others prepared when they didn't like her first choice!!

Re: Why do dances wear their tights over their leotards?

I've just asked DD and she says it's just what they're told to do at college!! She thinks it's because it does make their legs look longer, and it makes them all look more uniform when they're all together (you can't see so much difference between the length of legs!). She doesn't roll her leotard d...

Re: Auditions for next year

Last year the colleges that DD applied to all ran the auditions in a very similar way....it was a full day and comprised (in varying order!) Ballet class Jazz class Acting workshop and Monologue (own choice, the only stipulation was that it must be age appropriate and Bird said PLEASE don't do "...

Re: Jazz dance extra class

I don't know any specific associate schemes, but my DD and her friends take classes at Pineapple or Danceworks in the holidays - she's 16 and at MT college. It will depend on whether you are close enough to London obviously!!
