Re: Mental health in performing arts
I wrote a long and detailed response, but I've deleted it as most people here simply won't understand. I've been a member of the forum for quite a long time, and really thought that as an employer of young people, and somebody who used to help train them - it was handy for everyone to have one male ...

Re: Mental health in performing arts
What happened to toughening people up to be able to take the slings and arrows? Wanting the industry they are training to join to be nice and 'ist' free is a wonderful idea, and while perhaps it is getting better in some ways, we're in danger of not preparing people for the real world, where people ...

Re: Mental health in performing arts
While that comment about having eaten too much at Christmas - I'm afraid I actually support honest and truthful comment like this. If a 17 yr old is upset by this for it to last a lifetime they are unsuitable for work in this industry. I'm sorry - but compared with comments in the real world they ne...

Re: Mental health in performing arts
I thought I posted this, but probably got busy before I posted it. I see great steps being taken to raise awareness of mental health. Indeed, I belong to a craft guild - all professional people, from students to retired, and the organisation ran a story about mental health issues and the response wa...

Re: Performers College Degree Course
If you get a degree validated by a university, the paperwork that has to be done usually includes projections of student numbers that must match the details provided of staffing, space and availability, so it would be normal for the first year to have an intake no more than that included in the docu...

Re: Performers College Degree Course
But the point I was trying to make was, for example, if you had a household income of £60k and one child your ability to fund a course would likely be far greater than if you had the same income but 4 kids. Yes - I see your point, but children are an expenditure too, and while nice to have, if you ...

Re: Performers College Degree Course
If you include household expenses, then there would be a need to itemise them. I have two sons, one is permanently poor, the other much less so despite similar incomes. It would be unfair to give one a lead over the other because one is a saver and spends less, while the other has lots of monthly re...

Dance training in Life - sickness
Each year in panto I get some very able dancers - never ever concerned about their performance standards, but I'm amazed by their total lack of knowledge in some really important areas. Last year it was pay, tax, NI, pensions - that kind of thing but this year it's hygiene. They're all fit people bu...

Re: Agency fees
If you phone your agent and say Hi, it's Naomi, or some other less common name, do they say Naomi who? The best agents remember their clients names - or at least have a system quick enough to type in "Naomi" and get three or four pop up and then they can guess. If they don't know who you a...

Re: Agency fees
The £35 could be easily lost in all the money you make from them, or they could be the kind of agency who sign everyone they can, collect lots of £35, and never give you any work. In general, though, agents fall into to types. Those who have a lower number of clients, but do really represent the cli...

Re: Children with behavioural issues
Thanks everybody - I've had some very useful information, so really do appreciate it. It only really becomes my problem if it goes wrong and of course it would be me that has to do any bad news, but nobody wants that to happen. At the moment, the chaperones are keen I don't do anything, because thei...

Children with behavioural issues
Has anyone got any experience of performing children who have behavioural issues? For obvious reasons I can't explain my problem in full here. I'd really appreciate some either general advice here, or maybe a private message or two. I genuinely don't know how to get the lad integrated properly. At t...

because somebody thinks it is a good thing to do. I bet the staff are not so keen. Management rarely understands the things the staff deliver!
I suppose that some still equate exposure in the media with success?

Re: Impressed with a college but put off by it's reputation.
The thing we should all remember is that the college fell for the oldest media trick in the book, and figured that the programme would be good for them by focussing on their best attributes and the quality of their output and teaching, The programme producers of course always intended something diff...

The Degrees that earn the most
Some depressing facts in this survey of Degrees and the salaries graduates get after a few years - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-41693230 Sadly - we are bottom - and that really says something about the career prospects of doing what we do. It also shows that where you get a degree from is eve...
